Pan’s Labyrinth

I only heard about this movie when I watched the Golden Globes and people were just raving about it, although I think the only nomination it received was for Best Foreign film. It did not win, but today it was announced that it also received a Best Foreign film nomination at the Oscars. I love foreign movies, I do not want them dubbed in English, but with close captions. So today I decided to watch it with my close friend. Finally we’re watching a mature movie together, after all the PG movies we’ve watched with our kids. Set in post-WWII Spain, it’s actually about the horrors of war and how a lonely girl escapes it by creating an imaginary world. It is a beautiful, spellbinding movie, written and directed by Guillermo del Toro (I wonder if he’s related to Benicio?). I would love to have my daughter see it but some scenes are just so graphically violent. Even I got scared with the torture scenes, and the ending was both happy (in a twisted way) and tragic. I hope it gets more press so more people would see it.
